This is one that I thought I'd finished at one point (May 13th,
2011)... then I decided it needed a bit more work and officially
"finished" it (even crossing out and re-dating it on the
back!) on June 6th, 2012, before putting it up as part of "Exhibit
B."
"Crushed
By the Hand of God" is mainly the result of feeling overwhelmed.
I've had too many points in my life in which I felt like I really
had too much to handle, and then - lo and behold - a little more
(or a lot more) got dumped onto me as well. As the old saying
goes, "When it rains, it pours..." and I've certainly
had it "pour" more than my share of times.
The
feeling of this one is fairly "chunky," and I sometimes
think of it as a cross between Keith Haring, Ezra Jack Keats and
"The Simpsons." I used media gel to give a lot of
the paint an unusual sort of gloss that doesn't inadvertantly make
the painting feel "bright."
Thus,
the painting has an eerie sheen to it, except for the heavily textured
thick paint on the hand. The sky looks a little thin and grungy
by design; you can even see a little bit of the canvas peeking through
in a few spots.
And,
for those of you who are fans of classic alternative music... the
title is indeed a play on words based on the New Order song, "Touched
By the Hand of God."
