"One Night in Rio"
Duran Duran Tribute Night

SATURDAY
JULY 18TH, 2015
7:00 PM
LOT NO. 6

A little sleazy.  A little campy.  A little New Romantic.
80S CLUB COSTUMES RECOMMENDED - the TACKIER, the BETTER!

"One Night in Rio" is our wacky, tongue-in-cheek tribute night not only focusing on Duran Duran, but also on the decadent club scene of the mid-80s, when "portable" phones were so big you could beat someone to death with them, and it seemed like just about everyone was on cocaine.  (On a serious note:  Please don't bring cocaine.)

We want to see your best 80s club costumes.  Don't be afraid to be sleazy and tacky as hell.  Wear a little too much makeup.  Throw on a prom dress with your underwear on the outside.  Grab a white blazer with a neon V-neck underneath.  Spray on a little too much Drakkar or Obsession.  Don't be afraid to wear your sunglasses at night... and feel free to use so much hairspray that you rip a new hole in the ozone layer.

(And, yes, the rumours are true... we are planning to crown a "Mr + Ms. 80s Douche 2015" at this event.  Channel your inner James Spader and you could be the 80s douche of the night!  Just remember to strictly LOOK like a douche, and not ACT like a douche... okay?)

The musical theme will be close to the standard ResurXtion fare - 1980s new wave/alternative/goth/synthpop with a little 1990s thrown in, and maybe a few more "pop" club tracks than you'd usually hear.  (You're likely to hear a little Madonna alongside Siouxsie and the Cure.)

Obviously, there'll be a special focus on the work of Duran Duran - pretty much the literal poster boys for 80s pop music, who brought us such classics as "The Reflex," "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Rio," "Wild Boys," and Sparkle Motion favourite "Notorious."  Of course, we're also planning on working in selections from DD side projects Arcadia and the Power Station.

There will be plenty of rare remixes included, a number of which will be played from REAL VINYL!  As usual, it will all be presented with an incredible sound, light and laser system provided by Awesome Retro DJ Service.

BADGER

Tulsa's DJ Badger has been actively DJing for over twenty-five years, earning the respect of party crowds and his peers with his enduring old-school approach to performing.  Badger still prefers to mix using genuine vinyl on turntables (with CDs when necessary), without a laptop.  He has been featured on the main stages of 80s Prom and That 90s Party (twice each), as well as at SRO Remix, The Great Gypsy Chillout, Retro Without Shame, the Tulsa Vinyl Society's Vinyl Brunch, and lots more.  He made his ResurXtion debut at ResurXtion 14 (Cure Tribute, "Our Last Dance Together").   His most recent major event has been "An Old School Techno Night" in March 2015.

Some who have been in the scene a while will recognize Badger as a member of the "Edge of Insanity" alternative radio crew in the early 1990s.  He has also worked as a music journalist, with a regular remix review column in the nationally-published Karaoke and DJ USA in the late 1990s.  In addition, he is the former manager/DJ of EKG Pro Mobile Music and the current owner/DJ of Awesome Retro DJ Service.

MIKE CASTLE

Mike Castle has a long, well-rounded musical history here in Tulsa.  Some may know him as a member of early-1990s industrial/synthpop group Red Red Groove.  Some may know him from his long employment at Tulsa's greatest alternative music store, Mohawk Music.  Many may know him from his years of DJ performances, especially during his decade at the Tulsa Eagle (at which he also serves as the KJ and event/promotions director).  Still others may know him for his wicked audio and video production skills.

Mike is supplying a very special treat for this event.  He has produced and will be presenting a massive, fully-produced video remix presentation, jam-packed with Duran Duran classics.  We at ResurXtion have been made privy to the setlist, and it is fantastic... including lots of DD hits as well as some more obscure treasures.

OUR "ONE NIGHT IN RIO" COVER SHOT CONTEST WINNER,
KELLEY ARBEENE!

In June 2015, we held a special photo contest in which people could send in their photos to possibly be chosen for the "cover shot" of the "One Night in Rio" promotional materials... kind of like the girl on the cover of Duran Duran's Rio album.

A panel of four judges pored through entry after entry, and when the dust cleared, the winner was Tulsa's Kelley Arbeene!  Her picture was sent off to be specially processed to look like a Patrick Nagel photo, then placed onto the posters and other promotional materials.

Many thanks to Kelley as well as ALL of our "Cover Shot" contestants!  Stay tuned for lots more contests and other assorted whatnot from all of us here at RESURXTION!

Second Place:  Pennsy Richardson, Tulsa
Third Place:  Amalia Smith, Tulsa
