DJ Badger: The News and the Journal

Hard to believe it's been 17 years, eh?

Hi, everyone.  I'm happy to report that things are going well here.  Lanna, X and I are all three in good health and decent spirits, despite the massive damage to any hope of normal sleep for quite some time to come.  :)

Well, yesterday was April 20th, and you know what that means, right?

For the worthless stoner punkasses of the world (of which I am most certainly not), 04-20 is like a holy day.

For other people in the US and around the world, it's the anniversary of the Columbine massacre of 1999 in Littleton, Colorado.

For me, it's very different.  04-20 is the anniversary of my senior prom, and this year, it just happened to fall on a Friday, exactly like it did way back in 1990.  So, I've been doing a lot of thinking about that time.  Heck, I even have the molten remnants of a piña colada here that remind me of the coconut scent of the fog I used to use for my DJ gigs back in the day.  (In fact, I still use coconut-scented fog for the performances whenever I can.)

I won't recap the prom weekend story all over again, but if you want to know the whole story about that weekend, I highly recommend checking out Journal Entry 16.  It was an exhilirating and extremely memorable weekend in 1990:  I went to my own prom on Friday the 20th, I did a college-level DJ performance in the OKC area on Saturday the 21st, and then I did a "magic" performance for a children's birthday party on Sunday the 22nd.  Even though school pressures had me stressed out to an excruciating degree, there were some really beautiful happenings there, and the prom was truly wonderful, in its own twisted little way.

It's crazy to think that it has been an entire seventeen years since that prom weekend.  Absolutely insane.

Of course, the cast of characters in my life has changed drastically since then.  It's been about nine years since I last saw my friend and mentor, DJ Dave; I've heard through the grapevine that he's doing well, and I hope that is the genuine case.  I have recently been in touch with old EKG members Kevin (currently living in a wonderful, wonderful place) and Billy (who is now living nearby, and actually attended my wedding in January - the first time I'd seen him in over 10 years).

Even though I live in the present, a great deal of me seems to mentally drift back to the past for various reasons.  I will never deny the power of the past...  It can be a dangerous thing, or a wonderful thing.  For me, it is sometimes a tool.  Learn from the past, and shape the future.

Musically, that's kind of what's happening to me.  I find myself spending more on rare remixes of classic dance songs (preferably on vinyl) than I spend on brand-new music.  I have recently been pulling old DJ-only remix service issues out of my archives and listening to them as well.

This is all building towards something, something wonderful... maybe another DJ Badger event later this year.  We'll have to see how things go.  There are parts of my sound system I would like to have reconditioned before then (I did a bit of pricing this week and it should be somewhat reasonable), and I need to get back into a better swing of beatmixing by doing some hardcore mixing practice.

I have more big news coming up... but that'll have to wait until later.  For now, I'm turning on some Eric B + Rakim, reminiscing about prom night 1990, and maybe working on some artwork before I crash.

Good night.
