MSW!
Speakers! Nine Inch Nails! Projects! Bennigan's!
MASSIVE
WICKED COOL JOURNAL ENTRY COMING, TWO ENTRIES FROM NOW. STAY TUNED.
My
apologies for not posting sooner. It's extremely hard to believe
that it's already October! That's just craziness. It's been
two months to the day since my last Jornal Entry, and I definitely hope
to post more frequently in the future.
I
have a variety of updates to give... So, let's get to them...
SPEAKER
FIXIN'!
As
some of you may have noticed at my last Gypsy DJ performance, there
was something going on with one of my speakers. It had a little
bit of an almost wooden-sounding "buzz" whenever the bass
kicked really hard. It wasn't horrible, but it was enough to get
on my nerves.
Well,
I recently took my entire set of speakers to Tulsa Guitar + Electronics
at 14th and Harvard, and they were able to locate and resolve the buzz
at a surprisingly reasonable price. I had another really good
experience with TG+E several years ago, and as far as I'm concerned,
they're the experts in town when it comes to speaker repair. Not
only do they know what they're doing, but they're friendly to boot.
I
will admit that I haven't given the speakers a really good test yet...
but I will try to do so soon. I have faith that I won't be disappointed.
MUSIC
SOUND WORLD IS ALIVE! (kind of)
While
I was at TG+E, I heard some very interesting news. Tulsa's Music
Sound World (whose passing I lamented back in Journal
Entry 70) is back up and running. While this is great news,
it is tempered somewhat by the fact that almost all of the staff is
new. For instance, don't go in expecting to see Randy, the old
owner, or Maury, the rental and DJ equipment guru. It's a new
ballgame.
So,
it's cool that MSW is not completely gone. However, I will admit
that walking in and seeing different people there is going to be like
walking into a theoretically-resurrected Mohawk Music and not seeing
Paul there; it just won't be the same as before.
BYE,
BYE, BENNIGANS!
One
business that I hope NEVER comes back is the 71st + Yale Bennigan's.
After being treated like absolute dog crap by one of their managers
over 10 years ago, Tim (DJ TMJ) and I boycotted the place and even contacted
their corporate headquarters to complain. (At that point, we -
along with Tim's then-girlfriend now-wife Lori - were visiting Bennigans
2-4 nights out of every week after his shift was over at Critic's Choice
video.)
Even
though we didn't make much of a dent in the overall picture, it's nice
to know that eventually the Steak + Ale/Bennigan's machine finally fell
over on its corporate ass and Bennigan's of Tulsa is now no more.
I only wish that I knew if/when the building is scheduled to be demolished;
it would be a worthy excursion to drive by and urinate on the debris.
NINE
INCH NAILS!
On
August 13th, Lanna and I went to Oklahoma City to see Nine Inch Nails
perform. It was quite possibly the most technologically stunning
show that I had ever seen, with a visual system incorporating three
enormous moving LCD screens. The track list included a variety
of bits and pieces from Trent Reznor's music catalogue, spanning from
1989's Pretty Hate Machine up through the current album, The
Slip. It was a far cry from the last time I'd seen ol' Trent,
back in early 1990 when he performed at Cain's Ballroom as the opening
act for Peter Murphy. Lanna and I are considering going to see
NIN at Tulsa's new BOK Center in November, but we'll have to see how
things go when we get closer.
THERE
ARE BIG THINGS ON THE HORIZON...
I
know that I often say that I have a lot of projects that I'm juggling,
and that something "big" is coming up in the future.
Well, I can definitely say that even with all the time I spend with
Lanna and X, I have still been devising and producing some wonderful
wonderments for my friends and fans.
The really big news will be coming up in just two more updates.
So, stay tuned.
