As I explained on the site for the
original Great
Gypsy Chillout, my interest in downtempo music started
when I purchased a copy of Portishead's Dummy on
CD in 1995. It still ranks among my favourite albums
of all time, and I eventually purchased practically everything
that Portishead had ever released.
With the help of
the musical geniuses at Tulsa's Mohawk
Music, I began to get into more and more of the artists
in the "trip-hop" vein: Morcheeba, Sneaker
Pimps, Massive Attack, Hooverphonic, and others. The
more I purchased, the more appreciation I gained for the various
types of downtempo artists out there.
Since those days,
I have continued to amass a significant collection of downtempo
tracks - from relatively well-known downtempo artists like
those above to a lot more obscure artists like Lendi Vexer,
Quintero, Rose Smith, Hands Upon Black Earth, Echolocation,
Sarah Fimm, and the Moscow Coup Attempt.
In numerous cases,
I even had tracks flown to me from around the world, because
they weren't available domestically.
For reference,
you can find the full setlist of the first Great Gypsy Chillout

Also, for those
among you who are curious (or for those of you who already
love this type of music like I do), I'm offering a few full
streaming chillout sets for free on Mixcloud below...
Here's hoping you enjoy them!
